Linee S - Passante ferroviario
The city has a suburban railway system (lines 'S') that intersects the metropolitan lines in various stops. It goes all around the city till some main cities outside Milan (Novara, Varese, Como, Lecco, Lodi). The trains have a 30 minutes frequency between 6am to midnight (with some exeptions), easy to remember.
Here you can find the map of the lines 'S' included the intersections with the metropolitan lines

Specifically, the so called Passante Ferroviario (between the stops Bovisa and Rogoredo) is an underground railway passing through the city in 20 minutes using the urban ticket (1,50 €, 90 minutes). Their frequency is about every 5-10 minutes.
The urban ticket can be used to reach some stops included in the urban area using the train (ie. to go from Rogoredo to Lambrate or to Greco, or from Cadorna to Affori, etc.)
Motor infos - C Area
The city of Milan is provided of an external ring to access the city in different points, the 'tangenziale', divided into Nord (North), Est (East), Ovest (West).
To access the center by car, crossing the Bastioni ring (2nd ring), you have to pay the entrance ticket. You can find all the infos about it at the following link
http://www.areacmilano.it/
Sometimes cars are not allowed for the whole day for air quality reasons, usually on sunday, in the whole city. It's wise to get infos in time so to live the car in a parking area in one of the main access of the city.
